MONTICELLO - The Monticello Ponies are picking up some momentum at the just right time, just before next week's seeding meetings. Monticello topped the Pecatonica Vikings on Tuesday in five games, 15-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23, 15-9.
"It was back and forth for both teams, but the balls bounced our way in the fourth game," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. That led to the pivotal game five in which the Ponies took an early lead that they never relinquished.
Smice was pleased with his team's performance in a win over Argyle last week and Tuesday's win over Pecatonica.
"They can win after playing from behind and with the lead. They didn't quit and got it done again. That helps going into the final two matches," Smice said.
Monticello was led by junior Taylor Klitzke with six kills and three blocks, senior Haley Blum with five kills and three blocks, and junior Taylor Pfeuti with five kills and three blocks.
Senior Sadi Hilliard added 13 digs and two kills for the Ponies. Pecatonica's Kimee Chandler led the Vikings with seven kills and five blocks.
Senior Elizabeth Ihm had three kills and junior Ellie Gifford dished out nine assists. Senior Cassie Swenson had a huge night for Vikings with nine digs, and three aces, plus she went 17 for 17 on serves.
With the win, Monticello improves to 4-6 in the Six Rivers East and will travel to Barneveld Thursday before closing out the regular season at home Tuesday against conference leader Black Hawk.
The Vikings' next match is Tuesday at Juda.
