MONTICELLO - The Monticello softball team continues to roll, knocking off Belleville 9-1 for its fourth straight win this season.
Monticello (4-0) scored two runs in both the first and second innings to build a 4-0 lead.
Monticello senior Clare Geitzel went 3-for-4 and junior Alyssah Kubly was 2-for-2. Jordan Garrison, Marissa Berg and Brooke Bidlingmeier all went 2-for-4.
"Our 1-2 hitters, once they get on base, we do pretty well," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of Geitzel and Garrison. "They were a combined 5-for-8."
Monticello split pitching duties between senior Claire Bruns and junior Courtney Leuzinger. Both Bruns and Leuzinger kept the Wildcats at bay. The only run Belleville scored came in the third.
"Our defense was pretty good behind our pitching," Garrison said. "It makes coaching pretty easy when you have good defense and good pitching."
Riverdale 9, Darlington 2
DARLINGTON - The Redbirds couldn't hang on to a one-run lead in their season opener Monday.
Riverdale scored three runs in the third and sixth innings to cruise to a 9-2 win over Darlington. Darlington junior Chloe Hinderman went 2-for-2 and sophomore Ava Volkening went 2-for-3 to lead the Redbirds.
Darlington senior Jena Foulker pitched a complete game and gave up five earned runs. She struck out two and walked five and the Redbirds had five errors.
"It really should have been a 5-2 game," Darlington coach Karen Bennett said. "We had a few mental errors running the bases. Hopefully, they can learn from the mental mistakes. We will be competitive once we get going."
