MONTICELLO - The Monticello boys basketball team used a big second half surge to pull away en route to a 57-52 win Saturday.

Mineral Point had a 31-25 half-time lead on the Ponies. Monticello (15-5, 9-1 Six Rivers East) outscored the Pointers 16-3 in the third quarter. Monticello junior Austin Steffen hit a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 7 seconds to go in the third quarter to give the Ponies the lead for good.

The Ponies had a balanced offensive attack with three in double figures led by senior Tyler Ritschard who scored a game-high 24 points.

"The biggest difference was that we did a better job of playing defense on their post players in the second half," Monticello coach Mark Olson said.

Monticello senior Reid Zanoya scored 12 points and junior Lukas Kolasch added 11.

Monticello has designated Friday as Jim Zweifel Night. The Ponies will host Barnerveld and with a win could force a co-Six Rivers East Conference title for the third straight year. Zewifel, a Monticello alum, who played in the 1950s and was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame as a player, will be on hand.

Monticello is expected to honor Zweifel and award him with a plaque. Monticello will establish a "Wall of Fame" outside the gym for Zweifel and two others who were inducted into the WBCA Hall of Fame.
