PLATTEVILLE - Platteville-Lancaster's Ryan Pink scored the game-winning goal on a shot that skipped across a sloshy goal area in the 87th minute before Monroe senior goalkeeper Austin Murphy could make a save to give the Hillmen a 3-2 win over Monroe in a WIAA Division 3 regional game Tuesday.
"Every shot was just hard to handle," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. Most of the front of the goal was in mud. "He (Murphy) didn't get the jump he would have liked. It was frustrating because we had the momentum."
Before the game-winning goal, the Cheesemakers and Hillmen appeared to be headed for a shootout. Monroe junior Adam Ninmer scored a game-tying goal at 84 minutes, 25 seconds.
Early on, Monroe (4-12-1) had a couple of breakaway scoring opportunities with the wind and rain in their face.
"We just couldn't finish," Vasquez said. "We were not capitalizing on our opportunities, and even though the score was 0-0 that came back to haunt us."
Platteville's Jason Roling scored a goal late in the first half to give the Hillmen a 1-0 lead. Monroe senior Kevin Noriega scored a game-tying goal on an assist from McKenzy Foley to tie the game at 1 at 64:48. The Hillmen took a 2-1 lead on Everett Ellingson's goal in the second half.
The Cheesemakers out-shot the Hillmen 14-8. The 2 to 1 edge in shots on goal was hard to swallow for Vasquez, whose Cheesemaker team beat Platteville-Lancaster 3-1 earlier this year.
"We left them in it and it came back to haunt us," Vasquez said. "It was a tough one for our seniors. You try to take a lesson out of a defeat."
