Platteville edges Monroe

PLATTEVILLE - The Platteville-Lancaster girls swimming team edged Monroe in the season opener 85-76 on Saturday, but the Cheesemakers came through with several solid performances.

Monroe senior Rachel Root won the 200-meter individual medley (2 minutes, 35.91 seconds), and she took first in the 400 freestyle (4:57.18). Root's time in the 400 freestyle set meet and pool records.

"The first several meets of the season, I use to see what we have and plan for what is in store down the road," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "The girls do the same thing with their own goals and plans for the season. This is especially important with so many new swimmers this year."

Senior Sarah Kind took first in the 100 freestyle (1:10.67) and second in the 50 freestyle (30.61). Monroe's Monica Sefcik took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:45.62) and teammate Mackenzie Hesgard finished second (1:48.94).

Root and Kind teamed with junior Angie Beaver and freshman Anna Meritt to finish first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:40.32. Monroe's other 400 freestyle relay team of Sefcik, Jenny Meritt, Amanda Putz and Corlissa Robertson took second (5:14).

Root and Kind also teamed with Hesgard and Briana Katzenberger to finish second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:25.19.

Beaver took second in the 100 backstroke (1:24.11) and second in the 200 freestyle (2:36.40). The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Hesgard, Beaver, Haley Kaiser and Katzenberger finished second (2:17.90).

Meritt finished third in the backstroke (1:30.30) and Katzenberger posted a third place finish in the 50 freestyle (30.90).

The Cheesemakers will swim at McFarland on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
