MONROE - The rebound and goal Monroe junior Jason Atkinson scored on Saturday against Pewaukee was just a snapshot of the breaks the Cheesemakers hope to get by playing as a team.

Despite the team play, Monroe (1-2) faced a test against Pewaukee in a 5-1 loss at Honey Creek Park Saturday.

Pewaukee received two goals from Tony Trahan and John Paul Czerwinski to propel them to the victory. Czerwinski scored two goals in less than two minutes in the second half to thwart the Cheesemakers' comeback.

"We played good as individuals, but not as a team," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said. "That's the major reason for the outcome."

Trahan scored the first goal for the Pirates on an assist from Jordan Porter at 4 minutes, 25 seconds. When the Cheesemakers had trouble clearing the ball moments later, Trahan stepped in front of a pass and lofted a shot over Monroe keeper Kramer Henning for a 2-0 lead.

"As a team we have to mark guys," Stamm said. "If we don't take the guy closest to the ball that gives them opportunities."

Atkinson was at the right place at the right time for the Cheesemakers when he scored his goal to slice the Pirates' lead to 2-1 at 42:10.

"I think Dalton Curtiss shot it and someone deflected it," Atkinson said. "I saw there was an open shot. I ran in and tapped it in. I thought we had a chance to get back in it and score another one."

Atkinson said when the Cheesemakers get in the box, they have to work on not bombing away or shooting right away.

"We need to pull it out of the box so we can get a nice shot for rebounds," he said.

The Pirates scored three second half goals with two coming from Czerwinski.

"We were trying to push up a little more to get a score," Stamm said. "We were taking a little risk. Some of the guys were getting tired and we wore down at the end of the game."

Henning had 14 saves for the Cheesemakers.

"He's very coachable," Stamm said. "He has been great at keeping his mind in the game."

The Cheesemakers open Badger South play by hosting Milton at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Honey Creek Park.

"This is what is important to me," Stamm said about conference. "These first three games were warm-ups. We need to come out fired up about what happened today."
