DARLINGTON - Black Hawk sophomore Jared Pickett was the only area wrestler to qualify for the sectional at the WIAA Division 3 Darlington regional on Saturday.
Pickett (30-16) at 113 pounds defeated Lancaster's Tyson Wolff 13-0 and in the semifinals he was pinned by Mineral Point's Deven Walrack in 2 minutes, 53 seconds. Pickett rebounded and pinned Iowa-Grant's Jordan Jenks in 1:15.
"He is starting to peak right now where you need to be," Black Hawk coach Jim Seffrood said. "He's been talking about making it to state before the season even started. He has that mindset. It will be a tough road. He wants it bad."
The Darlington regional featured three of the state's top seven teams duking it out for one sectional berth as a team. Mineral Point won the regional 287.5-226 over Mineral Point. Lancaster finished third (215). Darlington finished fifth (95) ahead of sixth-place Black Hawk (74) and Pecatonica-Argyle (24).
"It's unfortunate that some of the teams ranked in the state didn't make it out," Seffrood said.
Four other wrestlers finished third and just missed qualifying for the sectional. The third-place finishers included Darlington senior Bo Brunkow (132), Black Hawk sophomore Dakota Meier (145), Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Gilbertson (220) and Darlington sophomore Hayden Black (heavyweight).
Meier, who bumped up to 145 instead of wrestling 138, pinned Pecatonica-Argyle's Jerimiah Tollakson in the quarterfinals in 3:13. Mineral Point's Tucker Prickel then beat Meier in a heartbreaker 6-5 in the semifinals.
"I was hoping to get three guys through," Seffrood said. "I thought he (Meier) had a better chance of getting out at 145. We had the kid on his back and pretty much stuck. We didn't get the call."
