Penalties doom Avalanche

MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op was plagued by penalties and lost a Badger South Conference game to Oregon 15-1 Friday, Jan. 3.

Monroe (2-4, 0-4 Badger South) had 10 penalties and it was tough to overcome playing shorthanded.

"For those kinds of penalties to happen is unacceptable," Monroe Avalanche coach Nate Brown said. "We had some penalties and that hurts our team with our small roster."

Monroe senior Jake Trickel scored at 2 minutes, 33 seconds in the first period on assists by Tyler Johnson and Alex Landen to give the Avalanche a short-lived 1-0 lead. The Panthers scored four goals in the first period and 15 unanswered goals.

"We flat out outplayed them the first 10 minutes of the game," Brown said. "We have to realize if we can't keep that up it won't matt."

Monroe senior goalie Ethan Studer had 39 saves.

"It's tough to be out there when you only have a couple of guys helping you," Brown said. "He (Studer) works hard."

Monroe will play at Stoughton Tuesday, Jan. 7.

"The key will be staying out of the penalty box," Brown said.
