MONROE - The Monroe Youth Hockey Pee-Wees (11- and 12-year-olds) opened the new year with a hard-fought, 7-6 road win over the West Madison Polar Caps.
Tyler Johnson led the Monroe scoring with four goals, and Kobe Manor, Jamaar Manor and Trenten Ryan contributed a goal apiece. Jacob Ritschard, Kobe Manor, and Jenna Schmerbach were each credited with two assists in the game and Johnson had one assist.
Monroe goalie Molly Gross recorded 24 saves.
Next weekend, the Pee Wees travel to West Bend for a four-game tournament at the Kettle Moraine Ice Center.
Avalanche Squirt
On Sunday, the Monroe Avalanche Squirt (9- and 10-year-olds) team traveled to Beloit and won 9-0.
The Avalanche continued to play strong team defense as it held Beloit to five shots on goal. Tessa Janecke stopped all five shots to record her first career shutout in goal.
Monroe's offense was lead by Tessa's brother Cade, who recorded a hat trick (three goals). Travis Edmunds also scored twice and recorded three assists. Cammi Ganshert, Riley Jones, Joe Wyss and Connor Nafzger also found the back of the net.
Later on Sunday, the team traveled to Janesville for a league game against the J-Hawks and won 2-0.
Cade Janecke caused a turnover in the neutral zone and beat the Janesville goalie to give Monroe an early lead.
Tessa Janecke scored Monroe's second goal midway through the first period to give the Avalanche a two-goal lead.
Edmunds got his first start in goal and stopped twelve shots. This marks the third consecutive game that Monroe has held their opponent scoreless.
Monroe next plays at Verona on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
