Pecatonica's best effort not enough against Darlington

PECATONICA - Kevin Parman couldn't have been happier with the way his Pecatonica boys basketball team hustled Friday night against Darlington.

The Vikings' coach couldn't have been more frustrated with the seemingly endless offensive options that Darlington threw at his team.

Brandon Hardyman scored 18 points and Cedric Flesher, Mitchell Whalen and Kent Miehe added 10 apiece to power Darlington to a 61-53 victory over Pecatonica.

Parman added a fifth name to the list of Redbirds who hurt his team: Jake Martin.

"No 32 for them stepped up and hit two 3s in the second half that were two big shots for them, I thought," Parman said. "They have enough shooters and then somebody else steps up and hits some big ones."

Darlington led 17-15 after one quarter, then outscored the Vikings 12-7 to take a 29-22 lead into halftime.

"We cut it to four late in the third and the beginning of the fourth. It was a great second half," Parman said. "It was just in the second quarter, we had a few turnovers and went quiet there for a little while."

Darlington went 14-for-21 at the free throw line while Pecatonica was 2-for-3.

"That's probably the worst thing we do right now is box out, and they took advantage of that," Parman said.

Karson Feller scored 22 points for Pecatonica and Tanner Kleppe added nine.

"(Feller) did a nice job inside and out," Parman said. "Kleppe hit some big shots and (J.J) Hogan only had four points, but he did a nice job running the offense.

"It was the most hustle I've seen out of my group. Darlington is just a good ballclub."

MONTICELLO 51, EDGERTON 40

CAMBRIDGE - Lukas Kolasch scored 19 points, Austin Steffen added 14 and the Ponies went 32-for-40 at the free throw line in the consolation game of the Cambridge Holiday Tournament.

"I can't remember that ever happening," Monticello coach Mark Olson said of a team shooting 40 free throws in a game. "We didn't give them many chances to actually shoot the ball. Luke hit a couple big 3s to jump us out to a seven- or eight-point lead.

"I don't know if frustration set in, but they felt like they had to pressure us and reached out and put us at the foul line quite a bit and we did a good job making our free throws."

The Ponies' Kolasch was named to the all-tournament team.
