HIGHLAND - Pecatonica swept Highland in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Vikings won the first game 5-3 behind timely hitting and good pitching.
Taylor Berg started on the mound and threw four innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Sophomore J.J. Hagen relieved Berg in the fifth and closed out the game.
Highland scored all three of its runs in the third on a home run to tie the game, but Pecatonica scored a run in each the of the fourth and sixth innings.
Tanner Kleppe was 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in and Wyatt Massey was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Chris Hendrickson was 2-for-4 and Devin Jeglum added a double and RBI.
In the second game, Pecatonica's starting pitcher Matt Goldthorpe went the distance, striking out eight and scattering nine hits. Goldthorpe, a sophomore, limited Highland's damage to the fourth inning, when the Cardinals scored all four of their runs on a grand slam.
Jeglum led the Vikings with two hits and a home run.
"Our pitches did a solid job," Pecatonica head coach Jim Strommen said. "The runs we gave up in both games were on a 3-run home run and a grand slam. And we got the key hits when we needed them."
The Vikings host Darlington Thursday.
