Pecatonica rolls Barneveld; Black Hawk's streak stays alive

BARNEVELD - Pecatonica co-volleyball coach Cher Schliem feels her team can be a contender in the Six Rivers East Conference this year.

The Vikings opened the season with a four game win over Barneveld, 25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19.

"We were very pleased overall," Schliem said. "We had good team chemistry. We worked well together. Everyone tried to create situations."

Pecatonica senior Cassie Swenson had a team-high 10 kills. Pecatonica junior Ellie Gifford had a team-high 14 assists and junior Jennah Schliem had nine assists.

Senior Holly Vlasak was a key on defense with 10 digs. Elizabeth Ihm added four blocks for the Vikings.

Schliem understands the Vikings will have to improve with a match Thursday night against Black Hawk, who has won the conference the last three years.

Black Hawk 3, Argyle 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Rachel Rygh and Kim Wellnitz recorded eight kills each while Alyssa Piefer added 12 assists in leading the Warriors to a 25-12, 25-18, 25-12 sweep of the Argyle Orioles in Six Rivers Conference volleyball action Tuesday night.

Argyle was led by Cassie Welch and Abby Flanagan with five kills each and Jeannie Dammen's nine assists.

Black Hawk has now won 25 straight matches against conference opponents.

Monticello 2

MONTICELLO - Taylor Pfeuti had six kills and Taylor Klitzke added four more for Monticello, but the Panthers outlasted the Ponies in five games Tuesday, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10.

With the victory, Juda improves to 1-0 in the Six Rivers East and 2-4 overall and Monticello drops to 0-1 in conference.

Southwestern 3, Darlington 0

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds were swept in three games by the Wildcats 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 in SWAL conference girls volleyball Tuesday night.

Elizabeth Mathias had three kills and four block kills for the Redbirds while Miranda Wiegel added three kills.

Whitney Hardyman chipped in with seven assists and three aces.

The Redbirds are 0-1 in the SWAL and 2-2 overall.
