NEW GLARUS - Pecatonica found out who will be its No. 3 starting pitcher: J.J. Hogan. The junior, who typically man's centerfield, held New Glarus to just five hits and three walks in seven innings of Thursday's 3-2 Vikings win.
The Glarner Knights scored their only two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh off of a Pecatonica error.
"Defensively we played well up until the end there when we made our only error," Vikings coach Jim Strommen said. "We could have almost turned a double play that would have ended the game. We were pretty solid for the most part."
Hogan only struck out two New Glarus hitters, but scattered hits and walks throughout the game, including getting through the late adversity.
"J.J. did a great job on the mound. It was his first outing of the year," Strommen said. "I thought he did better as the game went on."
Junior Tyler Kreklow took the loss on the hill for the Glarner Knights, allowing seven hits and three walks in seven innings. Kreklow also struck out six batters and hit another.
"The few walks hurt, and of course they got some big hits," New Glarus coach Warren Howard said. "That did it. That's what Pecatonica does to you.
"(Tyler) did really well. He kept us in there and battled all the time. He did a great job."
Pecatonica got on the board right away in the first. Leadoff hitter Tanner Kleppe walked to open the game and scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0.
"We scored enough to win. We had a few runs, but didn't hit the ball real well. Kreklow kept us off balance," Strommen said. "The batting order has been different all three games. We don't really have a true leadoff hitter, so we're looking for that yet. We've used three of them so far this year."
The Vikings added two more runs in the third. Hogan reached on a dropped third strike and later scored on a double by Taylor Berg. Two batters later, Ross Gilbertson brought Berg home. Gilbertson finished 2 for 3 at the plate in the contest.
"We played really hard and played great defense. We just couldn't get the big hit when we needed it," Howard said. "Pec's a good team and they just played better."
Brandon Gerber was 2 for 3 for the Knights.
New Glarus opens Capitol South conference play today at home against Lake Mills.
"We have to put it all together, and that's what we'll need to do (Friday)," Howard said. "We're playing good defense. The pitching has been pretty good so far."
