MONROE - The countdown to the kickoff of high school football practices is at 22 days.
Both Monroe and Brodhead-Juda have got a jump-start on the season as high school players gathered for a passing league game on Monday in Monroe.
"It gives our kids a chance to run, throw, catch and cover people," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "The goal is not to win some passing league. The goal is to get them out to work on some football skills. It gets them moving around and excited for the season."
The 8-on-8 passing league games feature a quarterback, running backs, tight end and wide receivers on offense. There are no offensive or defensive lines and no pads. On defense, both teams used defensive backs and linebackers to work on zone and man-to-man coverages.
High school football coaches are allowed five contact days by the WIAA to work with players in practice in the summer. Brodhead-Juda coach Jim Matthys said that he uses three contact days for a football camp, and he was using another contact day to coach in the passing league.
Matthys said Brodhead-Juda used to participate in a Green County passing league and went to a tournament at UW-Whitewater. Matthys uses the passing league as a chance for defensive backs and linebackers to get into a groove.
"I think it's better work for our defense than offense," Matthys said. "It's a chance to get kids out covering people."
Monroe and Brodhead-Juda have played a couple of passing league games with each other. Miller said Monroe has participated in some form of a passing league since he started coaching nine years ago. Monroe also played in the Argyle passing league tournament in Darlington a couple weeks ago.
"We both have similar schedules," Miller said of Monroe and Brodhead-Juda. "They always have a lot of good athletes."
