MONROE - One tough break early in a Badger South Conference showdown with Oregon was a big hurdle to overcome for the Monroe boys soccer team.

Monroe senior goalkeeper Lucas Koch came out to attack a header and it sailed over his head. Koch and senior defender Nick Gross collided and fell to the ground and Oregon's Ryan Machonga punched in a goal just before the near post. That goal sparked the Panthers to a 4-1 win over the Cheesemakers on Tuesday at Honey Creek Park. It was an unfortunate bounce that provided a teaching moment for the Cheesemakers, which dropped to 6-3-1, 1-2 Badger South.

"We had a turnover on our end of the field and it was like a domino effect," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "If you don't take care of the ball in that dangerous end of the field, it usually turns out bad. We want [Koch] to be aggressive. They just have to communicate a little better. If he comes out, the defenders have to know and they can't get in his way or run into him. They have to do better job of communicating."

The Panthers had no problems communicating early on. Oregon's Jackson Schneider scored a goal at 37:18 to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at the half.

Oregon (6-1-1, 2-0) extended the lead with goals by Andrew Jend and Nate McWilliams, to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.

Monroe senior Corey Flannery scored a goal on an assist from junior Alex Hendrickson at 72:66 to put the Cheesemakers on the board.

"Oregon is always a good team," Vasquez said. "They draw players from a lot of areas and programs. We have to almost play our best game to beat them. Early on, we had our opportunities. It changes the game if you can finish on your opportunities. You can make teams change their game."
