Panthers slip past Monroe

MONROE - The Cheesemakers let a close game slip through their hands on Tuesday, as the visiting Panthers gathered two runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 5-4 victory in Monroe.

"We played a clean game for a while," Cheesemakers coach Dustin Huffman said. "But towards the end, we just weren't able to make the plays necessary to get the win."

Both teams each scored one run to start the game, and after five innings the score was tied 3-3. After getting a couple of runners on base, a misplayed bunt by the Monroe infield allowed runners to advance. Not long after, Oregon then scored two runs off of a deep single.

"We made the pitches that we needed to," Huffman said. "But give them (Oregon) credit. They did what they needed to do in order to get the lead."

In six innings of work, junior Logan Weckerly gave up nine hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, and four strikeouts. Lucas Neuenschwander came in for the lone inning of relief duty.

Sean Saxby was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while teammate Chase Hellenbrand went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Jaron Kuester also had a triple for the Cheesemakers.
