BENTON - In a game Juda girls basketball coach Curtis Brown called "really exciting," the Panthers picked up a big non-conference win, 68-66, at Benton on Monday.
Senior forward Heather Boeke hit the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds left to give Juda (7-5, 1-5 Six Rivers East) a much-needed win after consecutive lopsided losses to Black Hawk (12-1, 5-0) and Barneveld (11-1, 6-0).
"We did a really good job tonight after last weekend. I would not suggest to anybody to play Black Hawk and Barneveld back to back," Brown said after beating Benton (5-7, 2-4).
Boeke's 20 points led the way, with freshman forward Ellen Kiser scoring 18. Brittany Riese scored 12 points and Larissa Klemm added eight for the Panthers.
"Our post played really well tonight. To score 38 points is great," Brown said. "And we're playing two freshmen right now and we're just getting better as a team."
Juda led 18-17 after the first quarter, and held a 39-27 halftime advantage. In the second half, Benton's Danielle Dixon took over the game. The leading scoring in both Six Rivers conferences, Dixon scored 26 of her 32 points in the second half.
"Going against the best player we will likely see this year, and pulling out this kind of a win is big," Brown said.
Juda lost its lead in the fourth quarter and trailed by a point with seven seconds left. But a free throw tied the score and Boeke's shot sent the bench into pandemonium.
Juda gets a couple of days to re-energize before hosting Argyle (1-12, 0-7) on Thursday.
