ALBANY - For sophomore Jessica Treuthardt, there was no way Argyle was going to overlook Albany in a Six Rivers East Conference match Thursday night.
Treuthardt scored 10-straight points, serving in the second set as Argyle swept Albany in three sets 25-16, 25-14, 25-15.
"I think our heads were in it knowing that we were coming off a big match and have a big match coming up," she said. "We did a good job of keeping our heads in it and pulling out a win."
Argyle coach Shane Johnson didn't want to have a letdown after the Orioles beat Black Hawk.
"I'm concerned going into every match," Johnson said. "At this point in time, they are all must-win."
The Orioles (6-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set. It was back and forth through most of the first set. It was tied at 15, but the Orioles were able to pull away. That all changed when Argyle senior Danielle Treuthardt closed out the first set with five straight service points including one ace.
The Orioles received some strong serving from senior Micala Peterson to lift the Orioles to an 8-0 lead at the start of the second set. After that Albany answered, with junior Cassidy Bump delivering nine straight service points to help the Comets come back and take a short lived 10-8 lead.
"We always start out strong," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. "We get to 12 or 13 points and then we have a hard time. I have asked the girls to help me figure it out."
That lead didn't last long as Jessica Treuthardt came through with 10 straight service points. The Orioles received strong net play with Danielle Treuthardt recording two kills during the run. Argyle senior Cortney Gilbertson had eight kills and five blocks to lead the Orioles.
"It felt really good to get a comfortable lead," Jessica Treuthardt said. "Everyone was working together. It was good to see."
Wunschel said the Comets played well, but just couldn't capitalize when they should have.
"We have to work on service receive," she said. "We got a little tight. If we can take care of the ball the other team has to work harder to set up their offense."
The final set was nip and tuck throughout until the Orioles' serving took over again. Gilbertson and Danielle Treuthardt each had two aces late to help the Orioles pull away. The Comets struggled at times with service receive.
Argyle junior Kayla Ostby had 23 assists and Peterson had 10 digs.
"I thought one of the keys was Kayla Ostby and how she was distributing the ball," Johnson said. "There were a lot of free nets for the hitters. They all have to work together for everything to work. There are plenty of times when it didn't. When it does, it looks good."
Albany junior Julia Farley and Bump each had four kills. Albany junior Kirstie Kauk and Bump each had 11 digs and senior Katie Krupke had six assists.
Johnson said the goal for Argyle is to have a 90 percent good serve rate every match.
"We served at 94 or 95 percent against Black Hawk," Johnson said. "We want to take some risks to serve some aces and to have some free balls. As a group they can improve and get more consistent."
