Orioles stymie Comets

ARGYLE - Offensive play was key to the Argyle baseball team in its 11-5 victory over the host Comets. Despite making contact with the ball throughout much of the season, Orioles coach Chuck Bredeson felt that his team finally got the breaks that his team needed.

"We found some gaps and we hit the ball hard tonight," Bredeson said. "We got more hits tonight than we have been getting throughout most of the season. We've really struggled as a team when we've had runners in scoring position, (but) tonight we were kind of able to get away from that."

The Comets scored two runs to start the game, but the Orioles consistently got runners on base and by the end of the fourth inning, Argyle led 5-4. In the bottom of the sixth, clutch hits by freshman Collin Argue and junior Kyle Olson sparked the Orioles offense en route to scoring six runs and ultimately putting their team on top.

Picking up the win on the mound was Orioles senior Alec Treuthardt who pitched all seven innings, giving up five runs (three earned), five hits, three walks, while striking out nine batters. Argue finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Teammates Brock Bruehlman and Derek Flannery each finished 2-for-3.

Darlington 8, Fennimore 3

FENNIMORE - For the Darlington baseball team, getting back on track is just a matter of getting back to the basics, and Redbirds coach Matt Austin knows his team is a tough out once they hit on all cylinders. Such was the case in Darlington's 8-3 victory over Fennimore.

Trailing one run by the time the top of the third came around, the Redbirds put their bats to work as they rattled off two runs in the third and fourth innings to take the lead. Another two runs in the top of the seventh provided extra security, while the Redbirds defense held the host Golden Eagles in check.

"These last couple of games we struggled and it seemed like we weren't having fun," Austin said. "(But) tonight I felt that we did a good job in getting back to that. Once we're able to play loose like that, we're a tough team to beat."

Junior Cole McDonald went the distance in picking up the win on the mound for Darlington. Cody Hardyman, Ben Muhlstein, and Jesse Sturtz each went 2-for-4, while Jason Singer was 2-for-5 at the plate.
