ARGYLE - Brodhead junior Ned Slocum was a thorn in the side of Argyle for the first half.
Argyle switched to a 1-3-1 zone and a trapping defense in the second half to limit Slocum's touches and the Orioles came back to knock off Brodhead 59-52 in a non-conference game Tuesday. Argyle (2-7, 1-3 Six Rivers East) rallied from a 10-point deficit. Slocum scored 25 of his game-high 29 points in the first half.
"He was just attacking the rim," Argyle coach Scott Noll said. "Just unreal. We just couldn't stop the ball. We wanted to trap him in the second half to keep the ball out of his hands."
Argyle junior Kyle Emberson scored a team-high 18 points and sophomore Colin Argue scored 17 points in his second start this season. Argyle junior teammate Riley Ostby added 15 points.
Brodhead jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter. The Orioles overcame a 10-point deficit. The Orioles outscored the Cardinals 35-20 in the second half.
Noll said the three keys to winning were sharing the basketball, attacking the basket and the defensive switch to a zone.
"We have had leads in games this year and haven't been able to close them out," Noll said. "With 1:45 left, we had a five-point lead and won. Tonight it was nice to see them close it out. It's a great team win."
New Glarus 65, Wis. Heights 35
NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus boys basketball team had the perfect way to beat the zone by Wisconsin Heights.
New Glarus shared the basketball and the adept passing led to a big shooting performance by junior Austin Schlueter en route to a 65-35 win over Wisconsin Heights in the first Capitol South Conference game of the season.
Schlueter scored a team-high 17 points. He made three 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored 11 points. New Glarus junior Gavin Binger scored eight of his 15 points in the first quarter as the Knights rushed out to a 21-6 lead. The Knights built an 18-point lead at the half.
"I feel like this is one of the most complete games we have played," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "Our defensive effort was great."
The momentum carried into the second half where the Knights outscored the Vanguards 35-23.
Sawyer Myers added 13 points for the Knights. With the win, New Glarus improves to 4-7, 1-0 Capitol South.
"We talked about being 0-0 in the conference and we have the opportunity with a win to wake up and be in first place in the conference," Sysko said.
