ARGYLE - It didn't take the Argyle boys basketball team long to improve on last year's 0-12 record in the Six Rivers East Conference. The Orioles defeated Juda 53-50 in their conference opener Thursday.
To do it, the Orioles had to fend off Juda's hot-shooting senior trio of Matt Trotter, Kade Allen and Cody Suiter, who accounted for all 50 of the Panthers' points.
"It's a good-shooting team," Argyle coach Michael Cassidy said of Juda. "We told the kids we knew they'd get back in it. The issue was could we take their best punch, and we did."
Argyle outscored the Panthers 27-15 in the first half, but Trotter, Allen and Suiter stormed back in the second half. Trotter finished with 21 points, followed by Suiter (15 points) and Allen (14 points).
Argyle's lead was too much, though, and the Orioles didn't back down.
Argyle was led by freshman Riley Ostby, who scored 18 points, and juniors Christopher Severson and Alec Treuthardt each chipped in 12 points.
Cassidy said the Orioles' balanced offense compared to that of the Panthers may have been a key to the victory.
"I think it's great for us," Cassidy said of Argyle's balance. "When you spread that out, defenses can't key on that one or two guys. For most of the night, we were still able to key on a couple (of their) players, and they didn't have that advantage. That's the type of balance we're looking for."
Cassidy, in his first season as head coach of the senior-less Orioles, said the win over the Panthers was a big one.
"For us, as young as we are, it's a quality win that I hope the kids can build on," he said.
As far as it besting their conference record from a year ago?
"That makes it all the better," Cassidy said. "We take it one win at a time."
Black Hawk 65, Pecatonica 43
SOUTH WAYNE - The Warriors remain unbeaten after collecting their fourth win and second conference win with a victory over the Vikings 65-43 at home Tuesday night.
Junior Tyler Peterson led the way for Black Hawk with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers along the way.
"I thought Tyler shot with confidence," Black Hawk coach Corey Manlick said. "He was able to get into a rhythm. I was definitely impressed by his output tonight."
It wasn't all Peterson, though. Senior Cory Rupnow chipped in 10 points, followed by junior Seth Butler (nine points) and senior Merik Meythaler (eight points).
Manlick was happy to see the balanced attack.
"It shows that our team is disciplined," he said. "Granted, some nights some guy may score a ton of points. On any given night we can have multiple scorers."
Leading the way for the Vikings (0-1 Six Rivers East) were senior Dillon Conwell and freshman Brooks Chandler who each had eight points.
With the win, the Warriors improved to 4-0 (2-0 Six Rivers East).
"We're having a nice little start here," Manlick said. "We're more athletic this year, we've got more scorers this year, and it's definitely paying off for us right now."
