ARGYLE - Junior Morgan Nelson's 3-point attempt hit the back of the rim and bounded away at the buzzer as Highland tipped Argyle 61-58 in overtime in a nonconference girls basketball game Monday.

Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard called a timeout with 9 seconds to go to set up an inbound play.

"We didn't run it correctly," Ritschard said. "She (Nelson) wasn't our primary read. Kirsten Ostby made a nice pass, and she (Nelson) got a good look at it."

Argyle (1-4) led by as many as 10 points in the second half against the Cardinals. Highland switched to a 1-3-1 trapping halfcourt defense to slow down the Orioles.

"We just didn't handle the pressure very well," Ritschard said. "We had some crucial turnovers and untimely fouls."

Highland senior Jessica Kosharek hit a jumper with 30 seconds to go at the end of the second half to tie the game at 52 to send it to overtime.

The Orioles scored six straight points in the extra session to take a 58-52 lead. Highland junior Kylie Esser scored down low with about 1 minute left in overtime to tie the game. Esser scored down low again with 30 seconds to go to give the Cardinals a 59-58 lead. Kosharek hit two free throws with 12 seconds to go to seal the win.

"We had three opportunities in the lane to take the lead, but they rimmed out," Ritschard said about the run of play after the Orioles trailed 59-58. "I was really happy with the way we played."

Argyle's Jena Saalsaa scored a team-high 20 points. Jadyn Saalsaa added 12 points, and Alysabeth Lantz chipped in 11 points.
