ARGYLE - Jozey Thoman put on a shooting clinic as she lead Argyle to a 58-33 win over Albany Saturday, Jan. 18.
Thoman scored a game-high 14 points and made three 3-pointers to propel the Orioles to the win. Argyle (5-4, 4-2 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter. The Orioles, who had three players in double figures, led by 20 points at the half. Argyle senior Jessica Treuthardt and junior Jenna Langmeier each added 12 points.
"In the last three games we have seen a lot of zone defenses," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "With her (Thoman's) ability to hit the outside shot it has been able to open up our offense against the zone."
Ritschard likes to see the balanced scoring the Orioles displayed Saturday.
"Our main focus is making sure everyone is a threat offensively," Ritschard said. "Having that balanced attack makes it more difficult to guard us."
Albany's Felicia Conley scored a team-high nine points and Marley Malkow added eight points.
Barneveld 73, Black Hawk 43
BARNEVELD - The Black Hawk girls basketball team was no match for No. 2 ranked Barneveld as the Golden Eagles rolled to a 73-43 win over the Warriors Saturday.
Barneveld (12-0, 5-0 Six Rivers East) raced out to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter. Black Hawk senior Jen Wellnitz, a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit, scored a game-high 26 points, but the Eagles led 34-19 at the half.
"More than anything we learned that they are very good," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "If they (Barneveld) don't win the state tournament this year, it may have a lot to do with them self-destructing. I have a hard time envisioning another small school team being as good as they are."
Black Hawk senior Michelle Flanagan added eight points for the Warriors which drop to 8-3, 5-1. Barneveld's Hannah Whitish scored a team-high 24 points and Rachel Slaney added 17 points.
Mike Flanagan understands that the Warriors' defense will have to be stronger.
"We can't give up 73 points and expect to compete with that," he said. "It's about finding a way to slow that machine down."
The Warriors are focused on taking care of business the rest of the way in the conference so their second matchup against Barneveld in South Wayne could be for a share of the conference title. Black Hawk will play at Argyle Tuesday, Jan. 21.
"We have to keep it relevant by continuing to win our conference games," he said. "We want to make sure that that second time when we see them in South Wayne that it means something."
