OREGON - The Monroe baseball team finally got a chance for their much anticipated season opener and sophomore Logan Weckerly pitched a solid game in a 3-0 loss to Oregon Friday.
Weckerly, in his first varsity start, pitched five innings and gave up just one earned run on eight hits. He struck out four and walked two.
"He threw all three of his pitches in the strike zone," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "He kept hitters off balance. He got behind some hitters, but battled back. I'm really happy with his performance."
The Panthers scored two runs in the second inning. The scoring chances were fueled by two of the Cheesemakers' four errors.
"That ended up being the difference," Huffman said. "I thought we came out and played really well. I think for only getting reps outside for three days we played well. It should be a confidence booster for the kids."
Monroe senior Mitch Riese went 2-for-4. The Cheesemakers collected five hits off Oregon pitcher Logan Laskie.
Senior Ryan Erickson went 1-for-2, senior Kevin Klopfenstein went 1-for-3 and sophomore Chase Hellenbrand was 1-for-3.
"We hit the ball hard. It was just right at them," Huffman said. "We hit the ball better than it shows."
Laskie struck out five and walked one.
Monroe senior Trent Wyssbrod pitched one inning in relief and gave up just one hit.
Monroe will host Monona Grove Tuesday and Fort Atkinson Thursday. The Cheesemakers will then play a doubleheader at Mount Horeb Saturday, April 13.
