OREGON - Monroe freshman Anthany Hernandez scored a goal in the first half to help the Cheesemakers strike first in a showdown with Oregon Friday.

Oregon, a Division 2 state qualifier the last two years, rallied to beat Monroe 4-2 Friday.

"They (Monroe) fought all the way to the last minute," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "That was nice to see."

With the loss, Monroe drops to 5-8-1, 0-3 Badger South. The goal by Hernandez on an assist from junior Ryne Miller at 18 minutes, 40 seconds gave the Cheesemakers a spark they could play with a conference favorite.

"It gave them a little bit of energy," Vasquez said of the early goal. "We haven't experienced having a lead on Oregon before."

The Panthers responded with three goals, but the Cheesemakers didn't go away quietly. Monroe freshman Nick Schumacher scored a goal on a pass from Silas Setterstrom to cut the Panthers' lead to 3-2.

Monroe junior goalkeeper Atticus Pond had 18 saves.

"It was important because in some of the games we have lost this year guys may have been thinking we will fall apart now after they scored three goals," Vasquez said. "They knew they had a good team effort. Oregon is one of the toughest teams we will play this year."
