OREGON - A chopper to Monroe second baseman Sam Marty in the 10th inning turned into the game-winning run. After fielding the ball, Marty made a throw to the plate, but Oregon's Jenna Gratz beat the play to give the Panthers a walk-off 3-2 win over the Cheesemakers on Friday.
It marked the second time this season Oregon has beat the Cheesemakers. With the loss, Monroe drops to 12-5, 6-3 Badger South and two games behind conference leader Fort Atkinson (7-1) and a1⁄2 game behind Oregon (6-2).
"Our big thing is we should not have been there (in that situation) in the first place," Monroe coach Joe O'Leksy said. "The first two runs we gave up were unearned runs. We made three errors. If we are going to beat a good team, we have to play a clean game. Oregon played a cleaner game. We should have won 2-0 if we didn't have the errors."
Monroe sophomore pitcher Olivia Bobak pitched 91⁄3 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits. She struck out 14 and walked none.
"She (Bobak) was in control the whole game," O'Leksy said.
Monroe junior Alysha Witt had an RBI groundout to score freshman Grace Tostrud on the second inning to tie the game at 1. Junior Madison Katzenberger knocked in the game-tying run in the sixth to tie the game at 2. The Cheesemakers loaded the bases in the sixth, but pushed across just one run.
"When we have the bases loaded, we have to score more than one run," O'Leksy said. "We just didn't get the big hit in that situation."
Now that the Cheesemakers are two games behind Fort Atkinson in the race for the conference title, O'Leksy still has big goals for a postseason run.
"I'm confident we can still finish the season strong," he said. "I just told them we play a lot of Division 1 teams on our schedule."
