OREGON - The Monroe girls tennis team lost a nail-biter to Oregon 4-3 Thursday, Sept. 12.

With the Cheesemakers trailing 3-2, it came down to Monroe sophomore Eva Priewe at No. 3 singles and sophomore Katie Demianiuk at No. 4 singles. Oregon's Kenzie Torphy defeated Priewe in three sets 4-6 6-2 7-6 (4) and Demianiuk defeated Oregon's Claire Massey 7-6 (7) 4-6 10-2.

"What a tough match tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Eva was playing a great match against a pretty equal opponent. The third set was back and forth with a lot of tough points. Eva got up 6-5 when the Oregon girl called for a line judge which completely changed the momentum of the match. The line judge did nothing wrong, but the delay in the match for him to get out there, and just the fact that he was out there affected Eva's game. Eva has nothing to feel bad about because she left it all out there on the court."

Demianiuk pulled out a key first set tiebreaker. In the second set, Demianiuk couldn't hang on to a 4-3 lead and lost three straight games.

"Katie completely flipped the momentum and dominated the third set tiebreak (we played a match tiebreak for the third set in Katie's match because the team match had already been decided and we were going to run out of light," Saugstad said. She bounced back from two very close loses in her last two matches and was able to get her first big win of the season."

In other singles matches, Oregon's Leah Koopman defeated Monroe senior Allie Coplien 6-2, 6-4 and at No. 2 singles Oregon's Michelle Preston defeated Monroe's Chelsea Miller 6-0, 6-3.

Monroe seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire at No. 1 doubles defeated Oregon's Kaci Bausch and Cassandra Krier 6-0, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's Paige Prien and Erin Gellings defeated Oregon's Katie Pliner and Renee Lawendoski 6-3, 6-3. Monroe senior Alisa Fager and junior Amber Jenson at No. 3 doubles lost to Oregon's Jess Bartlet and Madeline Bjorke 6-1, 6-1.

Monroe now gears up to host conference rival Monona Grove on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

"We need to bounce back from this loss," Saugstad said. "Monona Grove is going to be a big challenge on Tuesday."
