JUDA - With Juda-Albany locked in a tie game going into the seventh inning Monday, the roof caved in on the Panthers.

Orangeville exploded for eight runs to roll to a 14-5 win over Juda-Albany in the season opener for the Panthers.

The Broncos had six hits in the seventh off Juda-Albany ace pitcher Nicki Becker.

"We knew what Orangeville was," Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis said. "They are a very good offensive team. When you play in the cold weather it's tough to grip the ball and make it move. They had six hits and we had a couple of errors in the seventh, and you have a big inning because we didn't make the plays."

Becker gave up seven earned runs on 14 hits in the seven innings she pitched. She struck out one and walked three.

The Panthers had a couple of golden scoring opportunities. With the bases loaded in the third, the Panthers ran into a double play.

"We had a baserunning mistake and ran into a double play," Davis said. "We had an opportunity with one hit or two to take the lead."

The Panthers battled back to tie the game at 4 with a three-run sixth. Juda-Albany junior Sayde McDermitt hit a ball off the top of the fence with the bases loaded for an RBI single.

"If the weather had been warmer it would have been a grand slam home run," Davis said. "We were right there with them."

Juda-Albany sophomore Hailey Kammerer went 2-for-4 to lead the Panthers.

"This was a much better performance than against Wisconsin Heights, and it was cold," Argyle coach Heidi Ganshert said. "They were patient and hit the right pitches."

Paulson pitched a complete game and gave up just two earned runs. She struck out five and walked just one.

"I really look forward to how much more she (Butler-Paulson) can improve," Ganshert said.

Argyle will play in the Orangeville tournament Friday and Saturday. The Orioles will play one game Friday and at least two games on Saturday.

"It will be great to see how our hitting fairs against Orangeville's great pitching," Ganshert said.
