Nolden golden at Capitol Conf.

WATERLOO - Sugar River senior Mike Nolden continued a banner season by winning a conference championship at the Capitol Conference tournament Saturday.

After a bye, Nolden pinned Cam-bridge's Jack Nett in 2 minutes, 58 seconds. Nolden went on to edge Lodi's Michael Watters 9-7 in the championship match.

Lodi (276.5) ran away with the title. Sugar River finished sixth as a team (125.5).

The Raiders had three wrestlers who took third, including sophomore Taylor Christen (112), freshman Young-Chul Vetterli (135) and junior Brooks Hendrickson (140).

Christen finished 2-1. Lodi's Grant Robertson defeated him 16-0. Christen bounced back by pinning Lake Mills' Matt Hundt in 1:59. In the third place match, he defeated Cambridge's Jens Grieser 14-4.

Vetterli finished the tournament 3-1. After a first-round bye, he pinned Waterloo's Josh Tomaszewski in 1:52. In the semifinals, Lake Mills' Jeremy Primmer defeated Vetterli 15-0. Vetterli came back and defeated Marshall's Steven Filter in 49 seconds. Vetterli defeated Lodi's Caleb Latham 3-0 to take third.

Hendrickson also finished the tournament 3-1. After a first-round bye, Hendrickson lost to Poynette's Lucas Morse 9-6. He battled back and defeated Lake Mills' Mitch Lange in a technical fall 16-0. Hendrickson defeated Columbus' Ray Steger 8-0. Hendrickson avenged an earlier loss by Morse by defeating him 17-6 in a third-place match.

The Raiders had five wrestlers take fifth, including Kyle Xistris-Songpanya (103), Anthony Chiarello (119), Brett Grinder (130), Andrew Fink (145) and Jack Nelson (215).
