MONROE - After a series of rainouts, the Cheesemakers girls tennis team finally got a chance to take on Monona Grove. In doing so, Monroe (12-3, 2-1) won 5-2 in somewhat of erratic fashion Monday.
"This is a team we should beat," Cheesemakers head coach Stephanie Miller said.
Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of Pam Lehman and Melissa Hill won decisively, 6-1, 6-1, over Sarah Speigle and Claire Wilson. Throughout much of the afternoon, long volleys and sharp placement were centerpieces in the match.
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Gwen Sutter and Ashley Hermanson also won going away, 6-4, 6-1, over Steph Slinde and Ella Vaughan.
It was the No. 3 doubles team of Taylor Weis and Kelsey Erickson that ran into some trouble. Playing at Northeast Park, the two won the first set 6-0 against Adrianna Testolin and Molly Segall. Sloppy play then ensued. The two hit more balls into the net than either they or their coach would have liked. Despite leading the second set 5-4, the pair lost 7-6 (7-2) and were sent into a third and final set.
Miller gave her girls the pep talk they needed, and the two finished the third set with a 7-5 win.
Kristin McArdle took her No. 1 singles match with Amanda Platz into three sets, but prevailed 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. Ellie Shuda won the No. 2 singles match in solid fashion, 6-1, 6-3 over Veronnica Thompson.
Monroe's two losses, though, came on the back end of singles play.
Kiera Berger went back and forth with Beth Flaherty, but succumbed 3-6, 6-6 (10-12) in the No. 3 singles match. In the second set, Berger and Flaherty continued swapping leads. However, Berger fell in the extended tiebreaker.
Miranda Henke lost to Erica Gullickson 4-6, 2-6 in the No. 4 singles bracket despite playing well.
"She's a real good player," Miller said of Henke.
