No. 7 River Valley knocks off No. 5 Brodhead-Juda; Black Hawk loses

BRODHEAD - The Cardinals were 9-3 a year ago and ran their way to the state quarterfinals in the playoffs. In the 2010 season opener, it was River Valley that did the running.

The Blackhawks, ranked seventh in the WisSports.net Preseason Division 4 poll accumulated 153 rushing yards and 292 total yards in a 28-14 win over Brodhead-Juda Friday.

River Valley scored on the last play of the first quarter to break a 0-0 tie and added a second score just over six minutes later to make it 14-0.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 5, responded when senior Alex Wallace returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown. River Valley got on the board one last time on a 23-yard reception by Noah Baryenbruch.

With 56 seconds left in the third, Brodhead-Juda's Carson Scheidegger ran it in from 8 yards out to pull the Cardinals to within a touchdown. With 4 minutes, 8 seconds left in the game, River Valley scored on a 1-yard run to put the game away.

The Cardinals (0-1) amassed just 145 total yards of offense and converted just seven first downs. Jesse Delorme led the Brodhead-Juda running attack with 43 yards on nine carries. Nick Radlinger had 135 yards on 25 carries with two scores for River Valley (1-0).

Brodhead-Juda looks to pick up its first win of the season Sept. 3 at Cuba City.

Edgerton 39, Belleville-Albany 20

BELLEVILLE - The Wildcats season looked good in the first quarter after a 58 yard run by senior Donovan Woods, but the Crimson Tide rallied in the second.

Belleville-Albany led 7-0 after the Woods run and 14-7 after a 5-yard touchdown pass from Collin Adams to Mike Nolden early in the second quarter.

Edgerton scored three times in the second, including two interceptions that were returned for scores, and held a 39-14 lead before Adams scored on a QB keeper in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats gave up 305 yards on defense while collecting just 210 total yards and seven first downs on offense. Belleville-Albany also lost the turnover battle, 2-1.

Adams finished 7 of 12 for 123 yards and Woods had 86 rushing yards on eight carries. Alex Schauff had 2 catches for 69 yards.

The Wildcats (0-1) travel to Orfordville Parkview Sept. 3.

In other action, Shullsburg defeated Black Hawk 34-18.
