No. 4 Fury top 7th-ranked Wis.Valley Union

MARSHFIELD - Maggy Henschler scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to help the Rock County Fury girls hockey team slip by Wisconsin Valley Union 3-2 Saturday.

"I'm impressed on how our team came out ready to play after a tough loss," Fury coach Luke Steurer said of the team's 5-3 loss to the Cap City Cougars in Sun Prairie on Tuesday. "The girls were focused and played hard the whole game."

The Fury (18-3-2), No. 4 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey state poll, already have clinched the Badger COnference championship.

The Fury got out to a strong start against seventh-ranked and previously unbeaten Wisconsin Valley Union. Henschler scored her first goal at 2:23 in the first period. The game stayed that way until the third period.

After Wisconsin Valley Union scored in the first 3 minutes of the third period to tie the game at 1, the Fury answered. Monroe junior Cammi Ganshert scored a go-ahead goal to give the Fury a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin Valley Union tied it late in the third to send the game to overtime.

Fury goalie McKaylie Buescher had 29 saves. Wisconsin Valley Union outshot the Fury 31-25. The final regular season game for the Fury will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Janesville Ice Arena.

The Rock County Fury received a No. 1 sectional seed in the girls hockey tournament. The Fury will host the eighth-seeded Mauston co-op in a regional game at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Janesville Ice Arena.
