MONROE - The Monroe girls soccer team couldn't upset one of the state's top teams Tuesday, as McFarland shut out the Cheesemakers, 3-0.
McFarland sophomore midfielder Jacie Jermier scored two goals to propel the Spartans, who are ranked No. 3 in the state.
McFarland sophomore midfielder Jennifer Ujke scored the Spartans' first goal on an assist from Sara Stern at 4 minutes, 56 seconds.
"I think they got a little down on themselves when they (McFarland) scored in the first five minutes," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
"There are only so many games you can play at your top. We have played at the top for a number of games now. I think McFarland was the stronger team tonight."
Monroe (6-5-3, 2-2-1 Badger South) has won or tied six of its past eight games.
The Cheesemakers couldn't solve the Spartans' defense. O'Neill said McFarland's Ashley Alonso is an All-State defender who is tough to get around.
Jermier, who has scored 20 goals, scored her first Tuesday on an assist from Kerry Zimdars at 48:16 to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. She scored her second goal on an assist from Emily Stocks at 76:21 to put the game away.
Monroe junior goalkeeper Gail LaVoie had 11 saves to lead the Cheesemakers.
"McFarland has a very strong team," O'Neill said. "They have some really strong strikers on their team."
