ALBANY - Albany senior T.J. Zweifel knew if the Comets could beat Barneveld, the Six Rivers East Conference could be jumbled with a three-way tie at the top of the standings.

Barneveld, which is ranked No. 1 in the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Division 4 state poll, capitalized on six Albany errors to hand the Comets a 9-2 loss on Monday.

"We want to be the best and winning conference is our goal," Zweifel said. "We still have to play them one more time and we get Pec at home. Upsets happen."

The Golden Eagles (8-0, 3-0 Six Rivers East) took a 1-0 lead on three consecutive singles in the first inning off Albany starting pitcher Tyler Bauman.

The Comets committed four errors in the second, which opened the door to four unearned runs by the Eagles.

"We had some mental mistakes again," Albany coach Brian Dahl said. "I wasn't happy with the errors. We had a couple of miscues that cost us. It happens. We are getting better. That's all that matters."

Albany (6-3, 2-2) battled back in the bottom of the second. Barneveld starting pitcher Weston Peterson walked Bauman and Boomer Detra leading off the second. Peterson went to his mouth on the mound and the umpire called a ball and a balk, which moved two runners into scoring position. One batter later, Zweifel lined a two-run single to left to cut the Eagles' lead to 5-2.

Barneveld answered in the fourth by scoring two more runs to take a 7-2 lead.

Bauman pitched seven innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three, walked four and hit two.

The Comets went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and hit several hard line drives, but came up empty handed.

"We hit the ball hard," Zweifel said. "We hit it right at them. There's nothing you can do about it."

Peterson pitched six innings and gave up two runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked four. Patrick Clerkin, who was 2-for-2 with two walks, came in and pitched a shutout seventh and struck out two of the three batters he faced. Albany senior Brandon Pfeuti went 2-for-4 to lead the Comets.

Dahl doesn't want the Comets to change their hitting mentality at the plate.

"I thought sooner or later, they would start to fall in for us," he said. "That is part of the game. When you are hitting the ball hard, you can't change anything. You have to keep attacking the pitcher."
