JUDA - The Barneveld Eagles are ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Division 5 poll and average nearly 65 points per game, but the Juda Panthers didn't get the memo.

The Panthers and the Eagles hooked up in a defensive struggle, with Barneveld coming away with a 37-35 victory Thursday in Six Rivers East action.

The Eagles held a 21-17 halftime lead and extended it to nine points by outscoring the Panthers 12-7 in the third quarter.

Juda held Barneveld without a field goal in the fourth quarter and kept the Eagles scoreless until the final 17 seconds. That's when, with the Panthers trailing 33-32, they fouled Barneveld's Sam Nechkash, who made two free throws to give the Eagles a 35-32 lead.

The Panthers tried to tie it with a 3-pointer but missed. Barneveld's Colton Moyer grabbed the rebound and was fouled immediately, then made two free throws to put the Eagles up 37-32. The Panthers' Brandon Bauman hit a 3-pointer as time expired.

"I really liked how we played defense. We did what we had to in order to keep it close and Barneveld played great defense, too," Juda coach Mike Armitage said. "I'm proud of my guys. We could've folded."

Bauman and senior Joey Jordan each scored 12 points to lead the Panthers. Moyer had eight points for Barneveld.

"We don't want to have any more moral victories for Juda basketball," Armitage said. "Bottom line, it doesn't matter that we lost to Barneveld by two. The fact is, we lost and we don't want to accept that anymore."
