ALBANY - New Glarus-Monticello junior Ryan McCoy wanted the Knights to redeem themselves after struggling at the Platteville Invitational a week ago.

New Glarus-Monticello looked healthy and earned some redemption led by McCoy who helped the Knights win the small school division Baertschi Inviational Saturday. McCoy finished as the champion with a time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds and junior Alexander Yeiser took seventh (18:10). The Knights had five of the top 14 runners to win the small school division 44-62 over Poynette. Albany finished third (63) and Pecatonica-Argyle was fifth (163).

"We didn't run well in Platteville last week," McCoy said. "We wanted to bounce back and beat some of the teams who beat us last week. I feel like I'm in really good shape. The next week will probably be the toughest week and then we will taper for sectionals and state."

New Glarus-Monticello senior Evan Schultz finished ninth (18:27), sophomore Young Chul-Vetterli took 13th (18:43) and senior Wesley Morgan was 14th (18:47).

"I think last week was a wakeup call," said New Glarus-Monticello coach Steve Wehrley after a fourth place Knights finish. "Albany has continued to improve all season long and we better start to do the same. I think we were just happy to be able to compete with our friends and rivals in Albany."

Monroe finished seventh (173) in the large school division after resting its top six runners. Little Chute edged Platteville 44-52 for the big schools title. Brodhead-Juda took eighth (204).

"One of the reasons is we just wanted to give them a workout before conference," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said of the Cheesemakers' top six runners who practiced at Twining Park. "They are on a different mileage and peaking schedule than everyone else. We also wanted to give some other kids some varsity experience."

Monroe freshman Jeremy Miller finished 20th with a time of 18:45. Monroe senior Jacob Gassman took 27th (19:05) and junior Brian Schneider was 33rd(19:20). Senior Thomas Reynolds took 39th (19:32) and senior Ryan Treuthardt was 54th (20:04).

"I'm impressed that we were able to finish seventh," Hirsbrunner said with a new core of runners. "It's neat to see kids rise up and step up to the occasion."

Hirsbrunner was encouraged by Miller's race.

"He ran a really smart race," he said. "He really came on in the middle of the race. For a freshman, he's getting better every time out."

Brodhead-Juda senior Tate Harnack took 13th (18:14) to lead the Cardinals. The Cardinals had three of the top 43 runners. In addition to Harnack, sophomore Dylan Johnson finished 25th (18:55) and junior Dillon Larson was 43rd (19:40).

Albany had four of the top 18 runners in the small schools division led by junior Jose Ramirez who was fourth (17:31). Albany senior Reece Whitehead took fifth (17:46) and freshman Brennan Bloedel was 12th (18:37). Junior Chad Helland took 18th (19:00) for the Comets.

"I wish I would have run a little better," Ramirez said. "That's all I had today."

Pecatonica-Argyle was led by senior Wyatt Massey who finished 15th (18:50) and senior Cameron Colson who was 19th (19:07).

Every cross country team now is gearing up for conference. Monroe will run in the Badger South Conference meet at Milton Saturday. Albany will host the Ridge and Rivers Conference meet and New Glarus-Monticello will look to win its third straight Capitol South title at Belleville on Saturday.

"I just want my team to win," Ramirez said. "We will give it everything we have."
