WISCONSIN RAPIDS - New Glarus-Monticello senior Kelsey Bernet was hoping to end her illustrious high school cross country career with a strong outing at the WIAA Division 2 state cross country meet, but the cold, windy weather prevented her from a memorable finish, Saturday.
"I didn't feel like I ran my best," Bernet said. "But with the cold conditions, I didn't breathe very well because my side hurt."
Bernet, running at the Ridges Golf Course, placed 40th with a time of 16:02. Winnebago Lutheran's Marya Haegler won the race (14:33).
After qualifying for state all four years, Bernet was very familiar with the course but wasn't prepared for the raw weather conditions that affected the race. By the time the Division 2 girls race started, the wind had picked up and dropped light flurries on the course.
As a team, the Glarner Knights finished 13th. Pewaukee cruised to the Division 2 title with 62 points. Wisconsin Lutheran was a distant second with 134.
Despite finishing out of the top 10, the Glarner Knights weren't too disappointed. They were just excited to qualify as a team to the most important meet of the season.
"Everybody was underestimating us the whole year," Bernet said. "At sectionals there were four teams that were really close together. But we gave it are all at sectionals and we did really good."
After Bernet, NG-M's next fastest runner was senior Rachel Miller, who finished 91st (16:49). Sophomore LouAnn Judd was 99th (16:57).
Brenna Sargent placed 108th and Madeline Brunner was 120th. Haylee Thoman was 142nd followed by Jessie Pratt 147th.
Bernet said the whole team ran practice runs on hilly courses to prepare for the Ridges' swift inclines.
"We've worked really hard in practice," Bernet said. "We do a lot of hills, everyday."
While she would have enjoyed a higher finish, Bernet rated her final race at state as her best.
"This was probably my best because I'm a senior," she said.
The Glarner Knights were hoping to place higher than Dodgeville-Mineral Point, but the team's rival climbed to a seventh-place finish with 189 points. But they can take pride in having a four-time state qualifier in Bernet.
"She's a good runner," Miller said. "Amazing, strong, always fast."
Darlington placed 13th at the WIAA Division 3 state meet.
The Redbirds accumulated 258 points. Edgar won the Division 3 title with 107 points, barely brushing past second-place Cedar Grove-Belgium with 108.
Individually, Molly Seidel of University Lake School won the race with a time of 14 minutes, 33 seconds. Seidel outdistanced second-place finisher Sarah McMahon of Colfax by almost half a minute (15:02).
Pacing Darlington was Cheyenne Wolfe, who finished 58th (16:52). Amy Jorgenson was 64th (17:03), followed by Christa Wamsley (78th) and Hannah Robiolio (99th).
Olivia Wedig was 123rd and Claire Scott finished 126th. Tatum Evenstad placed 130th.
