NG falls; Black Hawk upends Warren

CAMBRIDGE - The New Glarus girls basketball team went through a scoring drought at the worst time and lost to Cambridge 43-30 Thursday night.

New Glarus (5-8, 1-5 Capitol South) entered the fourth quarter trailing 29-26. However, the Glarner Knights didn't make a field goal in the fourth quarter.

"We just couldn't finish the game out," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "That just killed us."

New Glarus junior Alycia Atwell scored 16 points to lead the Knights.

Black Hawk 40, Warren 27

SOUTH WAYNE - Senior Rachel Rygh scored 15 points and the Black Hawk Warriors grabbed a 27-4 lead early in the second quarter on their way to a win over the Warren Warriors in non-conference girls basketball Thursday.

Senior Melissa Wellnitz scored eight points and junior Alyssa Piefer added six points to keep Black Hawk, the No. 2 ranked team in Division 5, undefeated at 14-0. Black Hawk played without freshman Jen Wellnitz who sat out the game with a bruised quadricep.

Black Hawk will travel to Albany for a Six Rivers East Conference game Tuesday.

Brodhead 56, Parkview 52 (OT)

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead Cardinals saw a 13 point first-quarter lead slip away, then went to overtime to turn back the Orfordville Parkview Vikings, in Rock Valley South Conference action Thursday.

With the score tied 48-48 at the end of regulation, the Cardinals used the extra four minutes of overtime to outscore the Vikings 8-4 to get the win. Sophomore Taylor Douglas and freshman Carly Mohns each scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals.

Brodhead (9-6, 7-2 Rock Valley South) will be on the road at Jefferson Tuesday.

Barneveld 51, Argyle 25

BARNEVELD - The Argyle Orioles couldn't overcome a slow start and fell to the Barneveld Eagles Tuesday.

The Orioles scored just three points in the first quarter, but only trailed 9-3. Barneveld opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter to take a 26-11 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Sophomore Kayla Ostby scored nine points, junior Katie Dammen had eight, and juniors Danielle Treuthardt and Cortney Gilbertson each added four points to account for all of Argyle's scoring.

With the win, Barneveld stayed a game back of conference leader Black Hawk at 5-1 in the Six Rivers East.

Argyle (2-11, 0-6 Six Rivers East) will host Monticello Tuesday.
