New point of view pays for Kammes, Co.

MONTICELLO - A little change of scenery worked wonders for Tanya Kammes Monday night in a thrilling, 5-4 Six Rivers East softball victory over Barneveld.

Ponies coach Duane Garrison moved his leadoff hitter to the cleanup position and the senior outfielder enjoyed the view from the 4-hole, going 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"She's been in one hell of a slump so I decided to move her," Garrison said.

Kammes drilled a 2-2 pitch on a line back through the middle with two outs to cap the 2-run bottom half, after the Eagles scored two in the top. Starter Kelly Mueller helped her cause in a big way with the go-ahead two-out RBI-single that made the score 4-3.

"I was worried that might demoralize us," Garrison admitted.

Sophomore Sadi Hilliard and Brienna Voegeli singled from the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in Monticello's order to key the game-winning rally. Mary Hershberger went the distance and fanned seven to get the win after Barneveld won a 50-minute, 2-1 game at home over the Ponies Friday night. Mueller spun a one-hitter in that game to Hershberger's five-hit performance.

Monticello hopes to keep rolling in conference Thursday night when it travels to Juda.
