NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus High School baseball team got some big two-out hits in a six-run second inning en route to an 11-4 win over Mineral Point on Thursday.
Dalton Way went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead New Glarus.
"We got into some tough counts," New Glarus coach Chris Rear said. "We battled at the plate to get a pitch we could handle. We were putting the ball in play and making the other team make plays. That is what you want to do in baseball."
With two outs in the second, New Glarus junior Hayden Latsch reached on an error. Junior John Chenoweth and sophomore Jared Carney both walked to load the bases. Way then crushed a three-run double to left to give the Knights a 5-1 lead. Andrew Nimtz followed with an RBI single to left to score Way to extend the lead to 6-1. Zach Frick then reached on an error, and Nimtz and Noah Zimmerman scored to give the Knights an insurmountable 8-1 lead.
Nimtz went 2-for-4 with a double.
New Glarus improves to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in the Capitol South.
Chenoweth pitched five innings to get the win. He gave up one earned run on four hits. He struck out five and walked three.
"I thought he was really able to relax when we got the lead," Rear said. "Once we got the lead, he peppered the strike zone and let his teammates make plays."
