NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus High School girls basketball team hit six 3-pointers, made some clutch shots in the first half and rolled to a 56-34 win over Lodi Thursday night.
New Glarus sophomore Julia Barnaby scored a team-high 10 points to lead a balanced offensive attack. Sophomore Riley Parker added nine points on three 3-pointers, and juniors McKinley Righter and Devon Boll each added eight points.
New Glarus improves to 2-1.
"I'm really happy with how the girls are progressing," New Glarus coach Kim Burton said. "No one cares who is getting the credit. They are really unselfish on the court."
When the Blue Devils switched to a 1-3-1 zone in the first half, the Knights made them pay with Parker, Boll and senior Vanessa Narveson's outside shooting.
"Riley, Devon and Vanessa hit some shots that took them out of their zone," Burton said. "They really gave us a spark. Riley and Devon really hit some good shots from the perimeter.
Narveson and sophomore Willow Lee each chipped in seven points.
Burton credited senior Tamara Elzen for setting the tone.
"Tamara Elzen did a great job on offense of distributing the ball," Burton said.
The Knights have some room for improvement at the free-throw line, where they shot just 50 percent (8 of 16).
"We definitely have to work on our free throws," Burton said.
New Glarus will host Evansville on Tuesday in another nonconference game.
"We are taking it one day at a time right now," Burton said. "We are worried about the little things and improving the fundamentals. Hopefully, we can compete with them (Evansville)."
