New Glarus girls roll to win

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights bounced back from a narrow defeat Monday night that saw them go scoreless in a quarter, by defeating Capitol South foe Waterloo on Thursday, 63-17.

After Monday's loss against Argyle, New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said she made a point to remind her players to not let the last game affect them.

"The big thing I wrote on the chalkboard is 'be confident,'" she said.

If the box score is any indication, the Knights were plenty confident as they outscored Waterloo by double digits in three of the four quarters.

"It gave us confidence," Scheele said of the win. "Tonight we started off strong. We needed that boost to get going again."

Leading the way for New Glarus was junior Sierra Watrud, who scored 16 points. Fellow juniors Courtney Feller and Karina Moen each added 11.

"Karina was a nice spark off the bench," Scheele said. "She got steals off the defensive end and took it to the other end and scored.

"I was proud of them. They played together and got it done."

The Knights will look to keep the second half momentum going when they travel to Belleville Tuesday night. New Glarus won the last matchup between the two teams, 40-17, but Scheele thinks they'll be facing a different Belleville squad on Tuesday.

"Belleville has been playing well as of late," she said, "and we just have to play harder."

Black Hawk 42, Juda 28

SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk nearly got three scorers in double digits as they knocked of Juda at home Thursday night.

Junior Jen Wellnitz led the way for the Warriors with 15 points, and Abby Schiferl and Mikayla Sigafus each chipped in 8 points. Brittany Moe was Juda's leading scorer, with 10 points, and Tabatha Davis and Jessica Jordan each chipped in 7.

Balanced scoring is the thing Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan has been looking for all season.

"Those have been our best games, when we've found a way to get two or three kids in double digits," he said. "There's been games where that's been a real strength ... but I'd like to find that kid that consistently gets those numbers."

Still, Flanagan was pleased with the way his team played Thursday, but he's looking to ramp it up even more as the team prepares for two big tests in their upcoming games.

The Warriors will host Randolph Saturday at 1:30 p.m., before traveling to conference rival Barneveld on Tuesday.

"We need to play quite a bit better than we did tonight if we even want to begin to contend with Barneveld," Flanagan said. "(Randolph) might be playing their best basketball right now. If we can find a way to compete in or win that game ... that would be a great confidence builder going into Tuesday night."

Barneveld 59, Pecatonica 39

BLANCHARDVILLE - A sloppy first half doomed the Pecatonica girls basketball team against third-ranked Barneveld, as the Vikings fell 59-39 to the Eagles.

Barneveld led 17-8 after the first quarter and took a 35-12 lead into the half. Pec was plagued by turnovers in the first half, giving the ball back 12 times.

"It may sound like a coach talking, but we were doing more to ourselves than they were to us," Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum said. "We would get panicky and make bad passes, and they got some baskets off those."

The Vikings settled down in the second half, though, and outscored the Eagles in both quarters. Bakkum said his team did a better job of handling the Barneveld press.

"We just calmed down," he said. "They pressed us the whole game. They didn't change anything about their press. We were just more disciplined."

Barneveld's Hannah Whitish led all scorers with 16 points. Michelle Francois was the leading Viking with 13.

"Since Lizzy Britt has gone out, she's been the one consistent scorer," Bakkum said of Francois. "She consistently gets her 10 to 15 points. At the same time, we need to find other girls and we need to realize someone needs to step up and score in double figures."

Despite the loss, Bakkum said his team can come away from Thursday's game feeling pretty good, especially after their play in the second half against one of the top teams in the state.

"We talked about that after the game," he said. "There are things you have to correct, but that's a very good team. With all the mistakes we made, and being down one of our best players, to only lose by 20, you have to feel pretty good about that."

Pecatonica (6-8, 2-5 Six Rivers East) will have Friday off before hosting Belmont in a non-conference game Saturday.

Argyle 50, Albany 28

ALBANY - The Albany girls basketball team struggled offensively on their way to a 50-28 loss to Six Rivers East foe Argyle.

Argyle outscored Albany 12-4 in the first quarter and built their lead up to 41-16 after three quarters. Albany won the final quarter 12-9.

"We have a pretty young group and Argyle was able to press us," Albany coach Bryce Pickett said. "I made a big focus at the end of the third to shut them down on defense. The first three quarters didn't go the way we wanted, but we communicated better and played good team defense in the fourth."

Senior Kayla Ostby led Argyle with 18 points. Junior Katie Zwicker was the next leading Oriole, with 9 points. Senior Carlie Peters led Albany with 9 points, while sophomore Lyndsey Hoesly chipped in 8.

Pickett was pleased with the young Hoesly's ability to score.

"This was only the second game where she got significant minutes," he said.

One key for Albany (4-10, 1-6) in upcoming games is increasing their offensive production.

"We need to find a way to run our offense more efficiently," Pickett said. "We need to find more ways to get ourselves open. Cut harder, work harder in general. The opportunities were there. We've got a young team and hopefully that will come."

The Comets are off until next Tuesday, when they will host Beloit Turner. Argyle (8-7, 4-4) also returns to action next Thursday with a home game against rival Pecatonica.
