COLUMBUS - The New Glarus Knights used a big third quarter to pull away from Columbus, picking up a boys basketball non-conference win, 52-30, Friday.
"The third quarter was the difference," Knights coach Travis Sysko said. "In the first half we were a little sloppy with the ball and had 11 turnovers. We told the kids to be patient and run the offense."
The players listened to their coach and went on a 19-8 run to pull away from the Cardinals.
Ten New Glarus players scored, with Cameron Jeglum leading all with 13 points. Nick Stuessy scored 11 points, Ryan Bright had eight and Tyler Dorn added six.
New Glarus jumped out to a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, and held a 22-12 advantage at the half.
The Knights play their first Capitol South game Tuesday at Cambridge.
Darlington 63,
Riverdale 38
RIVERDALE - The Redbirds picked up a big win to open the conference season, knocking off the Chieftains.
Darlington held a 9-5 lead after the first quarter, and 21-16 at the half. But an 18-5 third-quarter run put the Redbirds out of Riverdale's reach.
Alex Erickson scored 21 points for Darlington, including three 3-pointers. Tyler Shager scored 15 points, and Tanner Havens had nine. Nine different Redbirds scored.
Riverdale shot just 3-of-14 from the charity stripe, compared to Darlington's 4-for-7 effort.
Monticello 55,

MONTICELLO - Monticello sophomore Lucas Kolasch stepped up big for the Ponies when they needed him the most.
Kolasch made two big plays at the end of the third quarter to give the Ponies the lead for good. Kolasch hit a jumper with 1 minute, 12 seconds to go in the quarter to give the Ponies a 32-30 lead. He then drilled a 3-pointer at the end of the third to push the Ponies' lead to five-points.
Monticello (1-1, 1-0) had four players in double figures, including senior Tyler Meier (14 points), Tyler Ritschard (11), Jacob Marty (10) and Kolasch (10). With the win, Monticello improves to 1-1 and 1-0.
Black Hawk senior T.J. Adams scored a game-high 24 points and hit six 3-pointers. Black Hawk senior Cody Foster added seven.
Barneveld 79, Argyle 22
BARNEVELD - Last year's co-Six Rivers East champions, the Golden Eagles, stalked the Orioles all night.
Argyle, which shot just 3-for-14 from the free throw line, trailed 31-4 after the first quarter and 47-12 at halftime. The score continued to fall further into Barneveld's favor in the second half, as the Eagles outscored the Orioles 23-8 in the third to hold an insurmountable 70-20 advantage with a quarter to play.
Jared Johnson led the Orioles with nine points and Nate Thomas had seven. Four Eagles reached double figures.
