NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus boys basketball team pulled out a 41-39 non-conference win over Darlington Monday night at the free throw line.

With New Glarus (5-16, 2-7 Capitol South) clinging to a one-point lead with 1 minute, 4 seconds to go, the Redbirds had to commit six fouls before the Knights could get into the bonus. New Glarus senior Gabe Noyce, who scored a game-high 17 points, made 1 of 2 free throws with 5.2 seconds to go, to seal the win.

"We were able to run about 40 more seconds off the clock," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said of the Redbirds needing to foul down the stretch. "It shortened the game."

Noyce had a big game scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter. He also made two of the Knights' four 3-pointers.

The Redbirds jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead. The Knights were able to slice the Redbirds' lead to 19-17 at the half.

"It's no secret that we have struggled this year," Sysko said. "It was a good win for us. "Hopefully, this will give us some momentum going into Waterloo on Thursday and the tournament on Tuesday."

Darlington sophomore Cole McDonald scored a team-high 13 points and made three 3-pointers to pace the Redbirds. Darlington junior Michael Ruf added 10 points.

Dodgeville 74, Monticello 73

DODGEVILLE - The Ponies rallied from a first-half deficit, but a hot hand on the other team kept them from completing the comeback in a non-conference game Monday.

Monticello entered the locker room at half down 38-23.

The outscored the Dodgers 24-12 in the third quarter and 26-24 in the fourth but came up just short.

Monticello coach Mark Olson said the Ponies were disappointed with their defensive performance in the first half. And while they were able to improve on some things in the second half, Dodgeville's Nick Crowley continued to find ways to score.

The senior led the Dodgers with 33 points, including 26 in the second half.

"He's a really nice player," Olson said. "He was making inside, outside shots."

Four Monticello players scored in double figures. Senior Bryce Klitzke led the way, with 22. Also contributing were Lucas Marty (18), Ben May (14) and Jesse Halvorsen (12).

"I was very very proud of my team," Olson said. "We were down 20 at one point. We took better care of the basketball and fought our way back into it."

Monticello (17-4, 8-3 Six Rivers East) will look to bounce back in Juda on Friday.
