MONROE - The Monroe Youth Hockey Association (MYHA) will have its registration for all new and returning Avalanche hockey players on Monday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Stateline Ice and Community Expo. SLICE is located at 1632 4th Ave. West.
For information or if unable to attend, leave a message at SLICE at 325-7464. Hockey practice begins the week of Monday, Oct. 10.
For new players, MYHA offers the use of most hockey gear for all first-year players at no charge. MYHA offers programs from 3 years through high school. In addition, MYHA offers a U12 girls team which was formed in December, 2009.
Last season was very successful for Avalance hockey players. The Avalanche varsity team won the state tournament and qualified for nationals. The Avalanche Mite A team was runner-up in the state tournament and the Squirt team played first in league play.
MYHA, along with other WAHA Region 4 Leagues, has adopted the American Development model, which is a nationwide model for developing American hockey players. There is less emphasis on statistics and win/loss records with the focus being centered on learning the technical aspects of the game. Fundamentals and building both physical and mental skills are crucial to success in hockey. This will directly affect the Mite age players as there is now less travel for games.
The local youth teams also sponsor a number of community activities. On Saturday, Sept. 17 there is a 5K-run sponsored by MYHA at 9 p.m., followed by a wine and beer tasting event that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 1, MYHA sponsors the chili cook-off on the Square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
