My View: New job but on old turf

There will be a new name at the top of many sports stories this season. A name not published in your paper much before, but a name that is recognizable nonetheless.

I am Adam Krebs, and I was born and raised in the United States' cheese capital of Monroe. From the time I was 12, I wanted to sit at the desk of ESPN Sportscenter. By the time high school came, I figured writing would suit me better than talking in front of a camera.

In high school I spent the majority of my time in either the front row in the stands at Cheesemaker games screaming away my vocal chords or on the field of play. My senior year, I started my writing with the Crimson Pride. Covering all the sports basically by myself only pushed me harder to get into college with the aspirations of continued writing.

At UW-Milwaukee and Highland College in Freeport, I majored in journalism and spent many nights cheering on whichever basketball team played. While at Highland, I was blessed by the baseball gods with a second chance at playing baseball. While using up my two seasons of junior college eligibility, Freeport's Journal-Standard gave me an opportunity in the sports department. After a year of doing page design and covering high school games and racing, I moved my young family to Minocqua to work for The Lakeland Times.

In the Northwoods I was the single sportswriter for Lakeland Union High School - about the same size of Monroe. With my camera and notepad, I covered nearly every sport the WIAA has to offer - football, basketball, volleyball, boys and girls swimming, gymnastics, hockey and more. I covered as many games as I could, every night of the week, traveling hours and hours - sometimes through the snow.

I left the Northwoods in February for Madison to work with Wisconsin Hoops Network - a Web site devoted solely to Wisconsin High School sports - especially football and basketball. When the opportunity arose to come back home to work for the paper I read everyday growing up, I couldn't resist.

So here I am, continuing my career in my hometown. I'm bringing my livelihood with me. I hope it will be as fun for you as I'm hoping it will be for me.
