Mount Horeb surges by Monroe

PRAIRIE DU SAC - Monroe sophomore Nick Schumacher had the hot hand in the first half, but it wasn't enough as Mount Horeb rolled to a 78-65 win over Monroe in a Badger Challenge game Saturday.

Schumacher scored 20 of his team-high 23 points in the first half. He drilled six 3-pointers in a 5-minute stretch and the Cheesemakers trailed by just one point, 33-32, at the half.

"Nick Schumacher had the shooting game of his life in the span of 5 minutes," Monroe coach Brian Bassett said. "He got hotter than hot and he is the reason we kept it close early in the game. The rest of our team was flat."

Mount Horeb outscored the Cheesemakers 45-33 in the second half. Monroe senior Alex Tordoff added 14 points and senior Carter Sawdey had 10 points.

The Vikings made 25 of 30 free throws in the second half and finished the game at 88.4 percent (26 of 38).

"We were flat footed on defense the whole day," Bassett said. "We fouled like crazy. We were chasing instead of beating them to spots."

Monroe (6-7, 2-3 Badger South) will play at Lena-Winslow on Tuesday and then play a Badger South Conference game at Oregon on Friday.

The Cheesemakers played a 1-2-2 three-quarters zone against Mount Horeb on Saturday.

"Mount Horeb has always given us problems and we decided to try something different," Bassett said. "We thought we could get some turnovers. We didn't get the turnovers. We struggled with our man defense. We will see what we will do."
