MONTICELLO - The Ponies continued their heavy hitting, overpowering Madison Abundant Life 25-14, 25-10, 25-18.
Marissa Berg led Monticello with 11 kills and Alyssah Kubly had 8. The Challengers had some kills of their own with Brittany Gerry and Aspen Hensler both getting five.
"We're a power team with a lot of power hitters," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "We hit very well tonight. I'm pretty happy with our passing as well."
Clare Bruns had 22 assists to lead the Ponies and Claire Gietzel paced the team with 15 digs. Hensler had 12 digs, tops for the Challengers.
"I'm very happy with the way they played for the sets," Smice said. "You sometimes have a letdown when you win by a
big margin. We had a bit of that in the third game."
Juda 3,
Cambria-Friesland 0
JUDA - The Panthers opened the postseason with a straight-sets victory over Cambria-Freisland 25-13, 28-26, 25-16.
Though they won all three games, Juda overcame some adversity to get the win. One of their top players Jessica Jordan was struck with a migraine that began in game two, yet managed to battle through it and finish the match. She led the team with four blocks and had six kills, second only to Kristen Swaag's eight for the Panthers.
"Jessica Jordan was throwing up in game two," Juda coach Scott Anderson said. "She was switched to the front line after that and she toughed it out."
Tabatha Davis led the Panthers with nine assists and three aces. Cheyanne Ambler and Molly Marass paced the team in digs with 10 each.
"In that second game it was 25-26, they were serving for the game and Tabatha Davis had a great dig," Anderson said. "Digs is who we are. We turned those digs into attacks today and we had our best game all year."
Riverdale 3,
New Glarus 1
MUSCODA - The Glarner Knights lost a long, closely contested first game that became a deciding factor in their loss to Riverdale 32-30, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15.
Maddie Macht nailed 14 kills for New Glarus and Mandi Sargent had eight. Breanne Kreklow had 30 assists for the Glarner Knights.
"We played hard, but we had a lot of mental mistakes," New Glarus coach Megan Maas said. "We had some serving errors and a few times we didn't go for the ball - just some mental breakdowns."
Sierra Watrud led New Glarus with 14 digs and Maddie Macht had 11. Macht also tallied four aces.
"Our girls did everything I asked them to do, we just couldn't put it all together tonight," Maas said.
Brodhead 3, Montello 0
BRODHEAD - The Cardinals made quick work of Montello, breezing through the first round of the regional playoffs 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.
Carly Mohns led the team with 12 kills followed by Rachel Heller's 10. Payton Wright dished out 21 assists to lead Brodhead.
"We just talked about focusing on serving and controlling the tempo on our side," Cardinal's coach Erin Kammerer said. "I also had a few kids that had some strings of series that I'm pretty happy with."
Rachel Heller led Brodhead with 13 digs and Kylie Moe tallied three aces.
"Our setters and hitters are finding each other and I'm happy with our play," Kammerer said. "We have Parkview next and they are always tough, but Deerfield knocked us out of the playoffs last year. We want another shot at them."
Catholic Central 3, Albany 0
BURLINGTON - The Comets played their game, but it wasn't enough against perennial powerhouse Catholic Central, who won 25-9, 25-9, 25-10.
Alexis Kennedy led Albany in kills and aces with three and four respectively. The Comets had a total of nine aces against the Hilltoppers.
"They're the season-stoppers at regionals," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. "We stayed with them really well in all the games up to the seventh point."
Felicia Conley and Peyton Bloedel had nine digs each to lead the Comets.
"Even though the scores don't show it, we were right there competing," Wunschel said. "Nine aces against a state championship team is pretty good."
North Crawford 3, Pecatonica 0
SOLDIERS GROVE - The Trojans ran over Pecatonica to cruise to a first round playoff victory 25-4, 25-10, 25-11.
The Vikings were led by Brit Miller's three blocks. Julie Meyer, Clara Moen and Erin Kleppe each had two kills to lead Pecatonica.
"North Crawford was the number one ranked team," Pecatonica coach Tori Leonard said. "We didn't play very well and it comes back to the things we've been trying to work on all season."
Moen also led the team in assists with four and aces with one. Kailee Schraepfer also had one ace for the Vikings.
"This year's seniors showed good leadership and believed in me and my program," Leonard said. "The other girls will keep those expectations high and that will help us get better for next year."
