Monticello stuns Albany

ALBANY - Monticello sophomore Travis McCoy delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Ponies an improbable 7-6 comeback win over Albany in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game on Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Albany led 6-2 going into the seventh inning. Monticello senior Billy Sphar led off with a single off Albany junior pitcher Brock Gilkes. With one out, Gilkes then hit two batters, and the Comets committed three straight errors that led to three runs. That set the stage for McCoy, who delivered the game-winning hit for fifth-seeded Monticello.

"I'm at a loss for words," Albany coach Mitch Heinemeyer said after the Ponies scored five runs in the seventh to win it. "It was a shock to everyone. Monticello did what they had to do. They put the pressure on us. We didn't make the plays to help ourselves out."

Albany (11-12) had swept two games from Monticello during the regular season, outscoring the Ponies a combined 19-2.

Monticello senior Casey Schwartzlow went 2-for-4, and Spahr was 2-for-5.

Albany senior Cole Trapp finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and junior Andrew Kennedy was 2-for-4.
