EVANSVILLE - The late start to spring certainly didn't slow down the bats of the Monticello softball team, as the Ponies ripped 20 hits in their season opening 14-2 win over Evansville Thursday.
Five Monticello batters collected multiple hits. Clare Geitzel, Jordan Garrison, and Alyssah Kubly each had three hits, while Sam Devoe and Claire Bruns each had two. Geitzel and Garrison were the first and second hitters for the Ponies, and coach Duane Garrison said it was nice to get that kind of production from the top of the lineup.
"When they get on base, good things happen," he said. "It always helps when you get your leadoff hitter on four times in a row."
Bruns started the game on the mound for the Ponies and surrendered three hits and two runs over four innings to get the win. She was relieved by Courtney Leuzinger, who didn't give up a hit over two innings, while striking out five.
"My gameplan was to have both Bruns and Leuzinger pitch," said Garrison.
The Ponies play at the Brodhead tournament on Saturday, where they will take on both River Valley and Orfordville. Garrison said it will be a good early season test for his team.
"They are two very good teams," he said. "It will be a good challenge and test for us."
